I think both specs and code are important, and right now neither is enough on its own. A spec is great for big-picture thinking, but it lacks the detail that matters when things go wrong. Code has all the detail, but it's hard to step back and reason about the whole system by reading it. They operate at different levels of granularity, and collapsing them into one thing loses what makes each useful.
